It was quiet; that was needed. It was natural; that filled us with inspiration. It was comfy and cozy; that rested our hearts and bones. We never left in 7 days. At first we thought we might venture out to stores etc, but that desire quickly disappeared into complete contentment. It was music... just music—something like Yoyo Ma playing “Cinema Paradiso” in your ear! We are coming back—with a kayak next time!
If you're like me and your job is crazy when all your friends seem to be happily drinking rose on lakes between May and September without a care in the world, you'll understand a need to get away from it all. This place was everything I wanted: remote, but close enough to the necessities, completely devoid of wifi, in the middle of coastal Maine wilderness, and perfectly cozy. The cottage itself is well appointed for two people, possibly two parents and a toddler-to-preteen child (if you're the kind of person who brings kids on vacation). Simple, somewhat rustic, and delightfully quiet. If you get lucky like I did and the main house isn't occupied during your stay, the only living things you'll have to encounter will be a deer and a turkey family.
The only things I'd mention as slight warning are these:
-Swimming in Maine is always a little chilly, even in the middle of summer. The water temp was about 55 so it wasn't exactly tropical. And you may want to bring water shoes, as the coastline is a bit pointy. Shell debris, small rocks and more tiny hermit crabs than I've ever seen in one place.
-Expect fog. Lots of it. I did, and happen to love ocean fog, so I was in heaven.
-The showering is well and truly a communing with nature moment. It's outside the cottage and not fully enclosed. Freeing, and definitely refreshing, however.
-Bring a good selection of pantry items so you don't need to frequent the closest grocery store - it's for tourists, and a bit of a nightmare to shop. Everyone is very friendly though.
I definitely hope to book here again some time and will absolutely recommend the property as much as I can. Thank you to the McLean family for opening this cottage up to the world.
A return to nature and all that is peace and beauty
A quaint rustic cottage in a quiet and beautiful meadow of wildflowers ..... with a view down the slope and across the cove to a private island. A place to relax and find yourself and your family, with all the necessities and all of the charm you would expect from a woodland cottage. We hope nothing ever changes about the cottage, the area or the view ..... here's hoping a 1000 more visits will all be just the same. It's. little slice of Heaven on Earth.
Nice cottage in a nice location.
Well cared for, great view, nice town, easy to get to other places.
Superb Location, Great Cottage!
This place was a breeze to book with the owners, easy to contact them for questions, and is so much more than the few pictures they have. (Please put up more photos of the cottage...it is beautiful and the interior was much more than we expected). We have frequented this area so we were aware we would be far away from civilization. Plan to drive thirty minutes to get items you may need, with the exception of the general store. The cottage is so private, with wonderful acreage, a beautiful large beach and abundant wildlife all around you. The kitchen was updates and had everything we could need (We did not find a large lobster pot however, but perhaps our idea of a lobster pot is much larger than they had available), the bed was comfortable, the windows spectacular, outdoor shower clean with a great shower head. The owners are doing a great job and this property is worth much more than the cost they charge and a sure bargain. We will be back and recommend.
Could not recommend more highly
My wife and I stayed here recently, and it was perfect for us. So much of the best that Maine has to offer is within a short drive, and then we had our own quiet space to retreat to. The owner was having a gathering of musicians at the big house on the property, but it did not at all intrude on our privacy and just added a festive and homey atmosphere to our stay.
