My family (two kids under 5 yrs, husband and I) spent 3 nights at the cabin. The mountains in the area make a lovely view as you approach the cabin. My first impression upon entering the cabin though was "now I know why they don't charge a cleaning fee." There were clean towels and sheets but also personal items (sock, dog chewy) laying around and also a thick layer of dust on everything. We just didn't feel comfortable with our little ones playing around in there until we'd spent about an hour vacuuming dog hair off the couch, sweeping the floor, wiping down the toilet, etc. There was an abundance of cleaning tools there to do the job (5 types of dishwasher soap, for example).
The kids really enjoyed a dollhouse inside and the two swings hanging on a tree in the backyard. We all enjoyed the outside porches. The location, though close to the road, was rural and we enjoyed not seeing any neighboring houses. The property also backs up to a brushy/wooded area that was great for walks. I imagine during hunting season you could probably walk right into the Carson national forest that the property appears to back right up to. The mountain view out front was great, although it's a shame that there's no front porch to see it from and the window on that side is mostly blocked by a fence (I imagine it's for privacy though since the road is also on that side).
A few other things visitors might want to note are that the "town" of Tres Piedras has only a post office, restaurant and grocery store. And when we came into town the first evening, the store was already closed. It's a pleasant 30-min trip to Taos and you can get groceries or anything else you need there.
The cabin had nice hot water but we had trouble using the bathtub for our kids because the water would only come out one temperature after a minute- scalding hot. We had no trouble with the shower though. We also were unable to light the pilot light in the kids' bedroom but the house stayed plenty warm enough from the heater in the living room.
The water in the house is not drinkable well water, but the owner left a 5-gallon jug of filtered water for us and some bottled water, which was enough for our stay.
Overall, we enjoyed our time at the cabin and my husband would consider it in the future for hunting trips. We have a baby due next month and I'm not sure I would bring the baby and kids back though unless things inside and outside were more cleaned up or the kids were a little older.
