From the initial contact and email exchanges with the owner to the prompt & friendly escort from the car rental to the villa (thanks, Fred) to the very nicely situated and appointed abode, I can't say enough about our experience in renting Blue Bay View. Kudos Jane & Fred!!
If you're going for the peaceful Coral Bay vibe and crave the "airplane views" of a mountainside rental, this is your place! The pics are spot on.
No, this is no sprawling behemoth of a villa but there is plenty of elbow room and separated areas (in & out) to let everyone have their space if needed.
My two young adult kids each grabbed a downstairs BR and were very comfortable in these bright, airy rooms. I occupied the upstairs and felt like I was in a suite.
Everything worked just fine...microwave, fridge, toaster, etc, etc. Were did not lack for anything as the utensils, pots, pans, etc were plentiful.
Sure the shaded pool was too cool for swimming, but that's not why I came to STJ anyway. Besides, nobody's pool is warm in January!
All in all, I will be certain to check on Blue Bay View's availability FIRST when I begin planning my next STJ visit. First Class!
Trip report for Blue Bay View. My husband, sister and I arrived on July 26-Aug. 2. The greeter Fred met as planned at starfish market. We ordered and picked up a few items. Worked out very well. The road to the cottage is steep and narrow. It is doable, just go slow. The driveway is very narrow and backing out to leave was a little scary. You definitely need to rent a jeep. The View is beautiful!!! There is an above ground pool and grill area. We ate out every night. There is also a lookout deck that was phenomenal. The cottage was quaint and had the necessities. The upstairs area had the kitchen, living room,, bedroom and bathroom. There is a screened in eating area(verandah ) with a view. You walk outside to a stairway that leads to the downstairs area of the cottage. This includes a washer and dryer, two bedrooms, small area that had a bed in it. Air conditioning is only in the upstairs and one downstairs bedroom when we stayed. Also, the downstairs bathroom handle on the shower was loose. Just a mild inconvenience.This cottage worked out very well for our needs. Distance to Cruz Bay was 30 minutes on curvy roads. Overall, for the price, our stay was great and management was awesome. If there is a slight problem, they will make it right. I would not hesitate to rent from this management company.
We always stay on the Coral Bay side of the island for the quiet views. Some of the rentals on the east side are quite a haul to get to the north shore beaches, but this one was in a fabulous spot. Just removed enough, but not so far south east that it takes forever to get around. (we are snorkel folks, so tend to hit a lot of different spots)
The cottage is charming. There are additional bedrooms downstairs, but we never went down(was just the two of us). But if traveling with older children would be ideal I would imagine. The upstairs serves as a perfect little casita. We loved the porch, and the lushness of the grounds made for a very private feel. I hate when there are houses hovering right over you. You can't really see anyone near you. We would definitely stay at this one again. :)
This cottage offers all the big things that you can see in the pictures. Because it neglects some of the small things, this review may sound more critical than necessary. I try to keep in mind that the price is right! And we often get what we pay for.
Among the good things: great views, comfortable beds, a variety of outdoor seating areas with garden and views to Tortola, Virgin Gorda, as well as Hurricane Hole and Coral Bay harbor. There is the pool, of course, but we never used it. With snorkeling convenient east end sites every day, we weren’t particularly inclined to get in a pool.
There were abundant towels and having the washer/dryer was a real plus – means you can pack less! We used the grill; it worked fine. The gardens are very pleasant for coffee, rum, or anything else. The road up is steep, but, hey! It’s paved! 3rd or 4th time on St. John and we’ve been up hills like that without paving. 5 minutes to a good grocery. When we called on arrival we got the greeter who was cleaning the pool at the time. He met us at the Cruz Bay grocery store, and we followed him to the house. After that, we didn’t see or hear from him again. We might have. We had his number and there were a variety of small things that we might have called about. But we were on vacation, not quality control for the property. I like to assume that they have already put their best foot forward.
However, there are some issues that could improve the situation:
-The front door louvers do not open, nor close completely. Inefficient if the AC is on. And a curtain would help to keep out the morning heat.
-Shower handle in the downstairs shower came off repeatedly.
-Toilet paper holder fell off repeatedly.
-Ceiling fan in one lower bedroom did not work; and the remote for the AC didn’t work because the batteries were corroding. (The remote from the other AC did work.)
As I said, I could have called to complain and these things might have gotten fixed. But that’s no fun, and it was vacation! All the big things were on point. It was a comfortable place to stay. It would be handy if there were a group of glasses all the same size and shape – makes mixing drinks easier. Plastic is OK. Maybe some real wine glasses? A knife sharpener? OK I’m getting picky. But if you want to cut a lime, well …
Finally, I repeat, the price is right. The big picture is right. It’s just a few details that could make everything so much better.
First of all let me say this is our second stay on St John. The first house we chose had no air conditioner, no TV, no washer and dryer, spectacular views, a pool, and a hot tub and we paid twice as much. This house was comparable to the other one so spend what your budget allows, but understand that you can get the same for less.
House was exactly as pictured. Views phenomenal. Beds comfortable. Pool got sun in the late morning/early afternoon, but was warm enough to get in all day. There is a tree right above it that sheds little black things that look like ants floating on the water. Don't let this deter you from getting in. We just took the net off the pole and did a quick sweep and they were gone until the next nightly rain.
Water pressure was good and we did the "military shower" to conserve water. The hot water heater is small, but if you take a military shower you will not run out. We only used the hot water a couple of times since we found the cold water refreshing after a long hot day on the beach.
Speaking of water, you need to purchase drinking water. We did use the house water to brush our teeth and cook with and had no issues.
Having a washer and dryer is awesome. We washed clothes twice.
There are 4-6 towels in the bathrooms plus additional beach towels. There were 3 beach chairs, but there was only 3 of us so they may put them out accordingly. The cooler that is there is a tall Igloo type. We brought a backpack cooler for hiking so we never used the one that is there.
There is a large grill outside which we used for steaks. Fred had gotten a new bottle for us so we were sure we wouldn't run out.
There are tons of lizards, birds, and roosters around. There was a family of goats that roamed the hill above and below the cottage. I happen to love goats, but these were not willing to pose for a selfie with me. HAHA!!! Yes, I tried.
The road up is a typical St John road. The first time is kinda iffy, but after one up and one down I was comfortable driving it. We even stayed out after dark a few times and that was a first. It was a little slippery after the first rain, but I'm guessing that's because it hadn't rained in a while and there was sediment and such on the road that needed to be washed away. I would still get 4WD.
Having air conditioning was nice since it's summer, but we didn't turn it on until after 9pm when we were ready to go to sleep. Wasn't needed any other time.
Do not hesitate to book this property.
Our stay at this beautiful Coral Bay location was wonderful. The house was nice with the upstairs bedroom for us and 3 bedrooms and large bath downstairs for the teens. We had all meals outside by the pool because the VIEW WAS JUST TO WONDERFUL to eat inside. The pool was great for the teens. I would not suggest this location if you don't rent a Jeep for the week. Fred was at the Jeep rental office when we arrived and took us to the house. The beaches are all perfect. We rented a small boat with Noahs Little Arks and snorkled around the small islands. Virgin Fire for dinner and the flat bread was perfect. The only bad experience we had was going on a horseback ride(DO NOT). The guide was unfriendly and the location the horse where kept was in poor condition.
I will say this, get a map of the island and drive around your first day. We missed so much the first few day because we didnt know. We will be returning to this little piece of paradise. As they say on St John, "NO WORRIES MAN," and thanks to Fred and Jane it was.
