The listing is very accurate, but fails to account for the hidden benefit of renting from the Kiefers. You will not find a nicer couple to rent from. Down home hard working Iowa people who care about your stay. Property was clean and they live 300 feet from the cabin, so if you need anything, it will be handled. I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a rural type setting, close to big city amenities. Local Kalona restaurants are very good and reasonable. I have already booked two more months at this vrbo.
We had a little communication problem leading up our stay, but once Carmen fixed that, everything was great.
We came for the Wisconsin vs Iowa game and this was the closest remaining property that would work for our group of 6. It definitely is off the beaten path a bit, but it worked for us. Friday night we were tired and did not want to cook so went to the brew pub a few miles down the road. We were more than pleasantly surprised with that place and the food, I would highly recommend it. We declined breakfast on Saturday because we were off early to tailgate, but enjoyed Sunday breakfast delivered hot! Carmen's grandson gave us a very informative tour of the farm. We also enjoyed a nice big fire on Saturday night, something you certainly cannot get at the Red Roof Inn. WiFi and Sattelite TV were a welcomed bonus. If there was one downside, I would say it was the roosters underneath the back porch which apparently do not wait for sunrise for their wake up call, but we all had a good laugh about it. We are from Wisconsin and no strangers to farms, but I have to say this was a unique experience, in a good way.
Nice place to stay we enjoyed the view and the farmland environment.
Breakfast was amazing fresh and delicious.
Thank you Carmen
As long as you don't mind the "fresh" country air as the cabin is on a farm you'll love this cabin in the Kalona area. Carmen is very helpful and makes an excellent breakfast. This is our second stay and will come back again for an annual family get together. If there was one concern for us it would be the bathroom, for 4 guys, three over 6' 3, the small round toilet bowl made using the restroom more of a chore than we cared for and a tall elongated bowl would have been welcomed. Beyond that we had another great stay at the cabin.
This is a great cabin, very nicely built and set up. There was plenty of space for my family of 4 to spread out. The kitchen was great to use and I was able to cook most of our meals there, which to me is a luxury when traveling. We felt at home immediately. The farm itself was on some beautiful rolling hillsides with lots of animals and friendly dogs and cats. My daughter loved being able to leave food outside for the kitties and to collect chicken eggs for our meal. The location was great for day trips up to Iowa City (30 minutes) or Kalona (5 minutes) or just exploring the countryside. We happened to leave on a Saturday and were treated to an amazing giant breakfast delivered to our door before we left. The pancakes were wonderful! Thank you Carmen and your sweet family for sharing such a special place with guests.
Our family has stayed in many cabins all over the Midwest, and we have never enjoyed a cabin as much as we did this location. Situated on a farm with cows, pigs, (and one pet pig named "Little rock" chickens free ranging and 2 of the sweetest dogs that you want to take home with you. It is in the heart of Amish country in which you can find home baked, canned goods and woodcraft items. So fun to drive the country roads and see the Amish with their families riding in their buggies. A real step back in time. I have never been so relaxed. Carmen and Scott couldn't have been more gracious and welcoming. Carmen brought us breakfast of homemade cinnamon rolls, breakfast casserole, sausages, and fresh fruit on Sunday. The cabin is absolutely charming, and comfortably accommodated our adult family of 7. The loft is so cozy and spacious. Carmen and Scott, were so great in helping us find a reliable mechanic when our new truck had problems, they even offered one of their vehicles if needed! I can't say enough great things about the cabin and the wonderful Kiefer Family that is so genuinely kind and generous. We are already planning our next trip as soon as we can!
