We were pleasantly surprised at how big the space was. The previous reviews about the bedroom situation were misleading. You don't really walk through one bedroom to get to another, there is a room divider that makes it more like a foyer for the two bedrooms. Our family of four (boys 5 and 3) stayed with my brother and his wife. No issues at all. We had Christmas dinner there with another couple; very comfortable with 8 people in the apartment. We did have to borrow some kitchen knives from the other couple who lives in Salzburg as the ones in the apartment were not very good. A minor complaint. We tripped the electrical breaker when trying to vacuum, and got hold of the owner very easily to fix the issue (couldn't find the fuse box!!) I would recommend this apartment to anyone, except if it is when we are planning on going back! Loved it!!
There were only three of us, so there was plenty of room. Two real bedrooms with two twin beds together (European Doubles). And a single bed in the living room.
The apartment was well appointed, but if you want to do extensive meal preparation, bring your own spices.
Old town is a short 300 ft walk thru a tunnel. Grocery store close. And a great beer/pretzel stand right next door on the way to the tunnel. On the 2nd floor, so some steps to the apartment.
Otto, the owner, was a very good host.
Salzburg is a great city to visit; rent a bike and ride along the river; do the Original Sound of Music tour to see the country side; go to a concert; and the food and beer is not overly expensive.
We did not have a car, everything was within easy walking distance.
Our family of five (two kids plus a grandmother) stayed in this apartment in late October 2011. It was quite lovely and in a very convenient spot, just next to a pedestrian tunnel leading directly into the main "old town" attractions. It took us about 10-15 minutes to walk to the castle, etc. and everything is fairly compact. No cars are allowed in the old part of town, so we were very happy to rent the parking space offered with the apartment and leave the car there, behind a secure gate. The apartment itself was quite spacious, with large rooms and comfortable furniture. Some of the pieces were high-end and really made the apartment feel more special than your ordinary rental. The second bedroom is captive (you have to walk through the first to get to it), though there is a partial wall to provide privacy and we did not find this a problem at all. It's on what Americans would call the third floor, up a lot of stone steps, which might be an issue for some. Internet was provided with an internet-stick, so only one person could access things at a time and it was very slow. Herr Braun was very helpful, providing a map of the city, and meeting us two hours after our original appointed time when we got held up in terrible traffic.
We really liked being so close to everything we wanted to see. We especially enjoyed the Mozart dinner concert and the fortress. Unfortunately, the shops were all closed on the day we wanted to do some browsing -- a midweek holiday of some sort that we never did figure out. We also really enjoyed the salt mine tour in Hallein, about 30 minutes away by car and worth seeing to appreciate the source of Salzburg's wealth.
Die Salzburger Altstadt mit der Festung Hohensalzburg, der Dom, die Getreidegasse mit Mozarts Geburtshaus und viele Museen sind in direkter Umgebung. In wenigen Minuten zu Fuß erreichbar.
