Old Florida Cottage Charm with Owners dedicated to providing hospitality quality that is rare in today’s time. Perfect place for a couple to enjoy the beauty of Sanibel.
Perfect Winter Reprieve
I just returned from spending a beautiful month on Sanibel in this quaint, adorable cottage with my beloved Maggy (20 month old ShihPoo.) The beach is a short walk away and is pristine and uncrowded. I came back with quite a complete shell collection. The cottage is perfect for planning your days around beach activities and is well situated to catch the early evening breezes. The beautiful, rustic hardwood floor in the kitchen and foyer, the collected white wicker and rattan furniture and the beach décor sprinkled throughout lend this place a shabby chic cottage vibe. The spacious yard, screened in porch and jalousie windows on 3 sides (it's a duplex) prevent the condo-like feeling of being closed in. The shelves are overstocked with inviting books, movies and board games.
The cottage is situated in a friendly and dog friendly area. I got to know several of the neighbors on the beach. The neighborhood is full of flora and fauna, complete with an egret couple and babies nesting on top of a Norway pine. Fragrant moonflower vines woven along the street bloom at dusk. Within short walking distance is a great deli for lunch wraps, an awesome café for breakfast/lunch/dinner, an ice cream shop and 2 cute giftshops. The fishing pier and lighthouse are also within a short walk. It's a little longer walk to the marina and another fabulous restaurant.
The cottage's kitchen is small but well-stocked for cooking and there is a spotless gas grill outside. Average sized bedrooms are comfortable and each has its own air conditioner. There is a small but functional bathroom and an outdoor shower which is so refreshing after a long day on the beach.
The beach equipment includes nice umbrellas and coolers and weathered beach chairs. If you are a beach chair snob like me consider renting (they deliver).
Karyn and Richard are wonderful landlords who really care about your comfort and experience. I cannot say enough about how kind and thoughtful they were. For example, when I told them the toaster did not work there was a new toaster on my doorstep the next day, no problem!
I had a joyful, restful vacation and had absolutely no difficulty considering this my home away from home!
Thank you so much, Dr. Kaye! You are one of the loveliest ladies who has ever stayed at our cottage. Maggy, your adorable pup, was also a joy. You hung out on your own with no issue for safety either... but that's Sanibel - it is a "chill" vibe. We are thrilled that you liked your stay. And the cottage was even cleaner than when you arrived so thanks for keeping it so nice. (And that's was so nice of you because we pride ourselves on neatness and cleanliness for our guests.) I hope, someday, you and Maggy will grace us with your presence again. Let's hope MN gets warmer now that you are home again! Karyn and Richard
We looked forward to our stay at Seagrape Cottage. We were completely satisfied with our accommodation. Wood flooring in the entry, kitchen & hall areas. Thick comfy carpet in bedrooms & living areas. Screened porch in back, overlooking a shaded yard complete with picnic table & patio dining set. The cottage is on a quiet street, with friendly neighbors, and a 4 minute walk to the beach.
The hosts, Richard & Karyn are friendly and ready to help make the time in Sanibel time well spent. Greeted with a personal message and a bottle of wine upon arrival, a basket of brochures to guide one to places of interest or places to rent supplies, buy groceries, and eat, contact from Karyn to make sure we had all we needed made us feel comfortable and cared for.
Pots, pans, cutlery, bowls, everything needed to cook or clean is provided. Plenty of bath towels, beach towels, bed linens, blankets, placemats, plates, bowls glassware, are right at hand. Blender, toaster, coffeepot, tea kettle are handy.
Breakfast at the picnic table with grandkids, watching butterflies and birds fly past. Listening to an owl two mornings, or the tokay gecko calling from somewhere near. Walking to the beach, two or three times a day, or to the Lighthouse Cafe, Sporty Seahorse, or Pinnochios. Seagrape Cottage is near enough to everything to be convenient, but away from the crowd on the quiet end of the island. The lighthouse and pier are less than a half mile away.
Seagrape Cottage is a home away from home, a sanctuary with the right amount of property to building, allowing for wildlife such as rabbit, turtle, Pileatedwoodpekers, butterflies, ibis, cardinals and others to be seen from porch or outdoor table. Outdoor hoses and showers make beach cleanup easy. We had company in and out, our grown children, grandchildren, parents, and other relatives and friends, all had a wonderful time.
We wholeheartedly recommend Seagrape Cottage to any who relish a do-it-yourself vacation done in style, in classic Sanibel style.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review, Hans/Amanda. I appreciate the way in which you provide guests searching for a home feel comfortable and safe in what property they are renting and from whom. It makes the new vacation renter "explorer" feel like it's going to be not only "all right" but actually just great. I hope you will come back again & again. You are two of our favs and always welcome back! Karyn & Richard
Once again, I enjoyed the month of March at Seagrape Cottage, home away from home. The cottage has everything you need - - - bath towels, beach towels, fully supplied kitchen, washer/dryer, beach chairs, and quick follow-up from Karyn and Richard. I like returning to the friendly, familiar, and comfortable Seagrape Cottage. I look forward to my return visit in 2017.

P.S. Even Sadie recognizes as a familiar and safe place.
Overrated and overpriced
False advertising! Don't stay here unless you like shabby, dingy, dated and worn out furnishings which have probably not been updated or replaced since the early 1950's. Most of the cookware was old, worn and stained. The queen size bed was saggy and it took a week to convince the owner to replace it with their own personal, supposedly much better, mattress. The replacement was an improvement but by that time my wife's back was out for the rest of the months stay. Walls are peeling, cracked and sheets and bedspread were stained, worn and mismatched. There is only one towel rack in the bathroom which is not adequate for 2 people, much less 4. Plastic lawn furniture is cheap and has to be shared with next door tenant as does the barbecue grill and picnic table. The price for this house is very high for what you get. No dishwasher, no central air, only 3 noisy window units, a heating system that only marginally warms the house, and a small cheap table on the screened porch with 2 chairs again, not adequate if more guests are staying. The owner's description contains false claims such as private gem and 49 steps to beach but I paced it off at over 250. It is hard to find privacy in the back yard where there is no fence or wall to separate the area for the 2 units and furniture and gas grill must be shared. . Amenities also claim a pool but the only pool is standing water in side yard when it rains. The claim that a fitness center is available is misleading. The Sanibel Rec Center has optional guest membership at a price of ~$70 per week per person and is 10 miles away. We did not consider that to be a reasonable or practical option. My wife and I would not stay in this cottage again and would certainly not recommend it to anyone.
We're very sorry to have received your review -- the first negative in over twenty years of being owners. It's unfortunate that specialty support for an acute back problem was required, for which we were not equipped, nor aware of, until your arrival. We always attempt to accommodate our guests' reasonable requests wherever possible. After hiring a U-Haul and changing out the cottage's queen-sized mattress with our own personal mattress for your comfort, we were relieved to hear that it helped ease your problem.
As to the matter of your detailed perception of our 50s cozy country cottage, it comes as a surprise to us. You may have overlooked the description on our website, including information regarding the dishwasher and central A/C. And, you may, or may not, recall the phone conversation that we had in advance. It is customary for us to speak with our potential guests prior to booking in order to make sure it is a good fit. Unfortunately, it apparently turned out not to be.
We accept your critique for what it's worth and will endeavor, in every way possible, to ensure that our guests always feel welcome when they come to vacation at beautiful Sanibel Island. Past five-star reviews are evidence of all the satisfied folks who have enjoyed their stay with us here at Seagrape Cottage. As in the past, when our guests arrive, they can expect to step back in time to a more carefree, simpler way of life. We wish you well.
We loved this cozy little cottage which is perfect for a laid-back beach vacation. The cottage is clean and well-equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The backyard is a bonus for relaxing with a good book in the shade. This cottage is located in the coveted east end of Sanibel, close to the lighthouse with some nice little shops and restaurants nearby. The beach is just a few minutes walk away and is not busy near the Seagrape Lane entrance. The cottage comes with everything you need for hanging out at the beach and has an outdoor shower to wash off the sand when you get back.
Karyn and Richard were lovely hosts who ensured we had everything we needed and they suggested lots of activities and places to eat and answered all our questions. They kept in touch throughout our stay with information on what was going on around the island which was helpful.
We enjoyed walking the beach, shelling, fishing, biking, bird watching, and just handing out on the beach with family. We took in sunrises and sunsets on the beach just about every day and life just doesn't get much better than that!
We had a wonderful Sanibel vacation and would definitely want to come back to this cottage in the future.
Thank you Karyn and Richard!
Thanks for your comments, our wonderful Canadian friends. This is your 2nd time at the cottage and it means a lot that you've returned this year. We'll await you next year with a glass of wine on the beach once again -- A reunion! Fondly -- Karyn and Richard
