(The good) It was kind of a walk down memory lane for me, as I lived and worked (cleaning cabins) in the area in the late '60s, and this place has been around long before that. Outdoors was beautiful and serene, especially at dusk. The cabin is rustic, but has all the amenities for a short stay...i.e. no closets or dressers. (The bad) I was disappointed in the cleanliness of the place. My first impression on walking through the front door, was that the carpet had not been vacuumed or cleaned in a very long time. It could be due to the front door falling apart, and debris blowing in. The windows and screens were very dusty with lots of cobwebs. There was food that had been left behind, but (The ugly) the half-eaten burger in the fridge really put me off! I wondered if the sheets had actually been washed, but they seemed to be clean.
I fully understand the ravages of winter up there, but there really is no excuse for the lack of attention to detail in cleanliness. This cabin needs major updating! The bathroom sink was stained, and the shower was tacked together on a major crack in the wall. I think the owner should also mention the very narrow, steep spiral staircase leading down to the kitchen, with the only other option being to walk down a fairly steep bank outside. I understand that lake cabins go for a dear price, but this place was way overpriced for what one gets.
We didn't visit this year, but had to put in a date to submit a review! I have been going to the Blue Front Resort since 1985...Bill & Loretta sold it in the last few years and the new owners have taken residence there and many many updates since the 30 years since the first visit without taking away from the awesome ambiance. Great fishing lake, cabins right on the water, people are nice and the weather is usually cooperative. The cabins are very memorable and I could diagram each of them from memory. The fishing poles that all got slammed in the screen door and the tips broke off, the fish frys, the card games, the swimming, the canoeing and the times we had on the pontoon were unforgettable. I don't know how anyone could not love the Blue Front Resort. If anyone wants to see pictures from the 80's, 90's, 2000's, just let me know - we have tons of them. Only place we ever stayed other than some other lake I can't remember North of there - that should tell you something. Always caught our limit for largemouth, smallmouth, rockbass and crappie sometimes. Just cant say enough about the place inside or out. Thanks for the memories.
Pros: You can practically jump into the lake from the back door.
Cons: The cabin is old and very run-down. The flooring is horrendous(chipped, dirty). The bedrooms are tight(I would say if you are over 5'10"you won't fit in the bedroom). The fixtures in the kitchen and bathroom look to be recycled from some garbage dump. We were very disappointed in the condition of the cabin. However, it was not misrepresented on VRBO. I now know to pay attention to what is NOT said in the description. Also, there was only one picture of the inside- that should have been my first clue. This was our first experience renting on a Minnesota lake- I am guessing nicer properties come with a much larger rental fee. You get what you pay for, but I do feel a bit ripped off. We survived the first day because we were able to spend it outside on the lake. We woke up to rain the next day and decided to cut our losses- we left.
Had a great time! Nice cabin with comfortable beds and hot shower. Cooked the frozen pizza and enjoyed the bottle of wine that was waiting for us. Laid on the dock and watched for falling stars. Swimming and fishing off the dock. The lake is beautiful and clean. My wife and I loved the lake just outside the door. (literally 15 feet) Our favorite spot for morning coffee.
We really enjoyed our stay here. It was pretty primitive (no microwave, no air conditioning), but it was very clean and pleasant. For what we paid, we were very happy.
I would stay again, however, I would know to bring a portable grill as there was also no grill.
The owners left a small bowl of candy for us and had pretty candles set out. There were also 2 bottles of wine, but we weren't sure if we should drink it, lol!!
One drawback is the stairs. We were fine with it, but I think it would be hard for small children or elderly.
Overall, if you don't need anything fancy, I would recommend this cabin! We weren't in it much anyway because we spent most of our time on the dock fishing with the kids.
