The unit was okay... It wasn't as clean as I think it should have been. My grandsons feet were black on the first day from walking on the floor barefoot, crumbs under the toaster, under beds were yucky, no batteries in the tv remotes, no light bulbs in the lamps in master bedroom, and I moved the rug in the living room--dirty... I think maybe someone should check the cleaning crew...
But we loved the area...swimming pools and grass areas, close to Back Porch, and the beach accessibility...
This is an adorable condo. Has become one of our favorite places to stay in Destin. I love that The Back Porch Restaurant is right there. No need to pack a cooler unless you just want to. When you want a cold drink or something to eat, just walk a few steps to place your order. There's even waitresses that come to you and take your order. No need to get up from your comfortable position. It's a true vacation with relaxation!
Sterling Shores is our favorite place to stay! This unit is great for my mother, she doesn't like elevators and being on the 2nd floor is perfect for her. We can watch the kids play in the pool from the back porch while we enjoy the air condition! Love the new paint colors and will rebook this unit!
Ashley, the owner, has great communication. The location is nice, and the price was good. The furniture could use some updating, but for the money, we couldn't complain. Thanks!
The property was a bit worn and could use some minor repairs, but overall the unit was comfortable and met expectations.
The owner was quick to respond to e-mails and was helpful.
Enjoyed just sitting on the balcony with a drink and soaking up the sun.
The Sterling Shores was undergoing a large maintenance program while we were there and it was noisy at times during the day but they were close to being done when we left. The Sterling Shores location is centrally located with easy access to the golf courses, shopping and restaurants. We really enjoyed the seafood at the Back Porch, which is just across the street from the back gate of the property next to the properties beach facility. The exercise room had all of the equipment anyone could need.
Many of our issues with our stay are out of the control of the property owner, and would really only be an issue if you have several small children like we do (three boys, ages 6, 3, and 18 months).
Some of the things we liked and didn't like about the property:
1) Geat pool! Especially with small children...the depths range from 1" to 5'. The older boys can play in the deeper water, and the baby could splash around in the shallow area. Probably our only complaint with the pool is the limited number of chairs / umbrellas. We quickly learned to be at the pool right at opening time and stake a claim on a pair of chairs with an umbrella...they go quickly.
2). The condo was clean and well stocked. Others have complained about the finishes coming off all the kitchen and bathroom cabinets...this is true, but it is only superficial. I would expect higher quality from a condo rental with this rate, but it didn't bother us that much.
3). The second bedroom was very small, and didn't have a closet. Luckily with two small children, it was fine, but forget getting two larger kids or two adults in there.
4). We were under the impression that the property was right on the beach...it even is listed as "beach front" and "ocean view". It is neither. You can't see the ocean from the room, and to get to the beach, you have to cross a small street. Usually isn't an issue, but with three small children, it can be a challenge. Luckily, the street doesn't have much traffic, and it wasn't as big an issue as we initially thought it would be.
5). The property has about 300' of beach access...bordered on both sides by private beaches. As others have mentioned, if you don't pay the $30/day, or $150/week umbrella and two beach chair rental fee, you will be behind a wall of tightly packed umbrellas the entire width of the beach and three rows deep, with two small access ways (that you have to share with kayak rentals). If you bring your own equipment, you'll be forced to set up behind all these, and will be 50' away from the water.
6). There is no assigned parking spaces...you'll be forced to find your own space each time you return. There is a covered drop off area, but it can get very crowded at times. Luckily the room at right at the elevator, so the actual distance you have to carry your luggage (from the drop off area) is quite short.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but would prefer a less crowded beach next time.
