From the moment we pulled into the drive until the lodge was just a shrinking image in the rear view mirror, our stay at the Deer Dance Lodge exceeded all of our expectations. We were celebrating our family matriarch's 90th birthday, with our group of 17 spanning 3 generations with an age range from 18-90. Although numerous messages back and forth with Sarah had answered our pre-arrival questions about the accommodations, Deer Dance Lodge had more surprises around every corner than we could have ever imagined. The bedrooms were great, and the beds were so comfortable. Everyone had comfortable access to the numerous bathrooms, an abundant supply of towels, and no one ever felt that their privacy was compromised. On-site laundry facilities were also readily utilized for our 5 day stay at the Lodge. The 3 levels of the Lodge gave us all room to spread out, although we so enjoyed the large common areas for eating, game-playing, and relaxing. The kitchen facilities more than satisfied the cooks in our bunch, as well as the gas grill on the deck just off the living room. The large dining room allowed our entire family to eat our meals together, making dinners a true family affair and one of the highlights of our stay. The lower level game room and home theater were well utilized, and the sounds of pinball, pool, and good tunes on the juke box echoed throughout our stay. Outside activities included basketball, yard games, and room for a temporary pickleball court on the paved portion of the driveway. Away from the Lodge, a quick 5 minute drive got us back into Custer for any sort of resupply needed. Also nearby were numerous walking/running trails for the health conscious ones in our group. Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, horseback riding, and Custer State Park were all within short drives for our family's day trips. This was without a doubt an unforgettable trip, with an unforgettable stay at a remarkable log cabin/lodge. We wholeheartedly recommend staying at the Deer Dance Lodge for your visit to the Custer area.
This house is great! We had 18 of us stay for a family celebration, ages 2 to 72. It was great for everyone. It is very open and easy to get everyone together to talk, eat, play a game yet at the same time has enough space to be on your own or have a quiet conversation. The kids loved the arcade, movie theater, loft, outdoor playset and the land with all of its fun rocks and space to run around on. The adults loved the large room for games, porch, and the ease of use of the kitchen. The kitchens were well equipped with all the needed tools for cooking and grilling. Plenty of dishes, cookware, spices, crock pots, and some fun things like the pizza oven and milkshake maker. The grill was easy to use and ready for grilling. There was plenty of firewood and a fire pit for roasting marshmallows. We did not get to have a fire, as it was high fire danger but it looked easy and ready to go. There was a selection of movies, books and games to choose from. Plenty of bathrooms for all of us and we never ran out of hot water when trying to get all of us ready for an outing. The bed I slept in was very comfortable and there were plenty of blankets if you get cold at night. Everyone else said their beds were comfortable also.
The location is awesome. Very close to Jewel Cave, Custer State park, Hill City and Rushmore. I would highly recommend this rental. Sarah answered all questions quickly and it was well spelled out as to what the expectations were for check in, check out and such. Really the only negative I can say is that cell service is not great. But Sarah left a calling card for our use and the wifi is pretty quick so it was easy to stay in touch when needed. It was more of a nuisance and was actually a blessing to not be bothered by unnecessary phone calls. Love the place and would stay here again.
Our family recently stayed in this nicely situated house. We had plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable. The kitchen worked well for our number of people (10). The kids especially liked the arcade games and movie theater located in the basement. (We adults were happy they did!) The house has a few quirks, e.g. couples staying in the master can easily hear anyone staying in the room above them; the stairs to reach the second floor are shallow and can be hard to navigate; and the layout is a bit strange. But the grill worked well, the house was in good order and clean, and there was east access to many sights in the area. We had a wonderful time!
Our family had an absolutely terrific time staying together at the Deer Dance Lodge in Custer, South Dakota (six nights). We had eight adults and five children and there was more than enough room for all of us to truly enjoy our time there. The sleeping accommodations were plentiful with each individual family (4 families) having their own bedroom space. The kitchen and dining facilities were great with everything you would need to prepare meals. We cooked breakfast each morning and prepared dinner meals on 4 of the 6 evenings.
The property was gorgeous and we sat around and used the "fire pits" on many occasions late in the evening. The kids enjoyed the downstairs recreation room playing pool and the various pinball machines. We also watched one or two movies each day in the home theatre. The property is just a 5 minute ride to downtown Custer and many of the neighboring small towns were all very drivable and convenient. Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park were within about a half hour drive.
I spoke directly to the owner (Sarah) on two different occasions and she was extremely friendly and helpful in answering questions about the property and the surrounding area. We have stayed in various similar VRBO's over the last 4-5 years and our entire family would give this one our "highest" recommendation!
The Chamberlain family
This was an amazing cabin that exceeded our expectations!
We spend Thanksgiving here with our family of 15 and it could not have been a better place.
I'm not even sure where to start...the cabin is HUGE! 3 stories with large bedrooms and comfy beds. We took the loft, which worked perfect for our family of 4. Mom and Dad got the king bed and 2 kiddos each had their own twin, all in the loft! It was extra nice for each family to have their own bathroom.
The kitchen has a large fridge (think 4 families bringing food for 4 days), stove, microwave, oven, dishwasher, kitchen gadgets and place settings/silverware/cups. All in great/new condition.
There were plenty of linens/towels for our use.
Washer and dryer available for use was also a perk!
The basement was a paradise for the kids! Pool table, games galore, did I mention a theater?!?!
The scenery was beautiful and we spent time outside sledding, playing on the swing set, and going for hikes.
There are other cabins along the same road, but they are all separated a distance away. We have stayed at some cabins in the black hills where you look out a window straight into another cabins window, this is definitely not the case here.
We truly enjoyed our stay at Sarah and Bob's cabin and are looking forward to going back!
This place is located in a beautiful location, and is beautiful inside and out! There's something for everyone; pinball, pool table, fire pit, basketball hoop, and more! Kids and adults can stay entertained together or individually for the duration of time spent there. Once again, a great visit for our group of teens and adults!
