Eine echte italienische Erfahrung.
My husband and I stayed at il Refugio along with our good friends this past July. Bill and John were wonderful host and made our stay perfect. Their home is beautiful and the landscape is breathtaking. Every morning Bill and John made a spectacular breakfast and made sure we knew where we were going for the day. When we returned in the evening, they both sat down with us to enjoy a glass of wine and listen to our adventures. Bill provided maps to help guide us on our tours. After our stay we headed to Florence and ended our trip in Venice. I can say without a doubt our stay with Bill and John was by far the best part of our vacation. I would recommend il Refugio to anyone. Thank you Bill and John for a wonderful stay.
My wife and I had a perfect, restorative week at Il Rifugio. John and Bill couldn't be nicer: the beauty of their buildings and grounds reflects the same graciousness they show their guests. The setting in the hills to the south of Lucca has the gentle beauty one expects of the Tuscan countryside, but happily without the crowds, heat, or fuss of summertime Lucca. The croissants (cornetti) that showed up at breakfast everyday (fresh from the bakery up the hill) were better than any I've found in Paris. With the friendly, informal Tre Tigli available for dinner just up another hill from Il Rifugio, we didn't have to budge if we didn't feel like it. We're already looking for an excuse to come back.
Our recommendation could not be higher.
If you want to experience the warmth of Tuscany, this is the place to be! We stayed in the Aldo Cottage from July 4-8. It is a private cottage next to the main house, clean and comfortable, with a sweet patio area, a great place to sip some wine in the Tuscan sun. The grounds are beautiful with well-cared-for gardens that are vibrant with color. The location makes it easy to get around to various sights in Tuscany. But the absolute best reason for choosing Il Rifugio is the warm welcome that John and Bill show to all who stay with them. They generously share a wealth of knowledge and suggestions - best places to eat, easiest ways to get where you want, sights worth seeing (make sure you go to Cinque Terre) - that will help you make the most of your travels. When you spend time with Bill and John, you can't help but smile and relax - good conversation, great breakfast, lots of laughter, and genuine hospitality. We felt very special and cared for in our home away from home and we can't wait to return! Come and enjoy the Tuscan sun with John and Bill!
Our visit at The Hidden Jewel was truly amazing and comfortable! We were greeted with wine, cheese, crackers, cake and conversation. Bill and John gave us the history of the property, ideas for restaurants, train schedules and sight seeing. We felt like part of the family. The accommodations were impeccable; clean and extremely comfortable. Our breakfasts every morning was welcomed. It was a great start to busy days seeing the beautiful country and sights of Tuscany.
I would and already have recommended this vacation property to family and friends! I've stayed at other vacation rentals/homes but have never had the amazing accommodations and felt so comfortable. Great job Bill and John!!
Our family stayed here from June 14-18 and we can't recommend this property highly enough. First, as other reviewers have mentioned, Bill and John are delightful hosts. They've done an admirable job of restoring this old monastery and turning it into a once-in-a-lifetime refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life. Sant Andrea di Compito is a small village with a population under 500 and the description of "hidden jewel" is completely accurate.
We drove in from Austria, arrived mid-afternon and, after getting the car parked enjoyed a glass of wine in the courtyard with our hosts and a few of the curious neighborhood cats. The flowers are spectacular and my 18-year-old son even mentioned he thought he could tell a difference in how the air smelled. At night we watched lightning bugs (I hadn't seen those since my childhood in Iowa) and stars galore.
The location is a perfect base for Tuscany, the train station in Lucca is just a 15-minute drive and we were able to visit Florence, Lucca, Pisa and Cinque Terre (pronounced Chink-Wah Tehr) which is actually a series of five seaside towns. We drove to Pisa (the only thing to see there is the tower) then took a day trip down the coast and saw the most spectacular seaside views imaginable. Don't miss Cinque Terre - you'll drive to a train station that's about 30 minutes from the villa and then take a train to the uppermost city - Monterossa. Plan to eat and spend the bulk of your day there as it is by far the prettiest of the five cities and has the best restaurants. Bill will walk you through all you need to know before you go but this trip shouldn't be missed!
One of the things we enjoyed most was the restaurant that sits at the top of the hill above the villa. You walk up a steep street (with stone walls flanking you on both sides) past a series of houses and cottages and the restaurant sits atop the hill. Stefano, the owner, and his staff are engaging and the food is excellent. John taught them how to make a hamburger and it's one of the best you'll have. Pizza and pasta are excellent as well.
The villa itself is perfect - the main house has a second and third floor apartment with their own baths and there is another stand-alone apartment 10 steps from the main house (our son claimed that one). The breakfasts are delicious with fresh fruit, croissants, etc. and John even made us bacon and eggs on our last day. You won't go wrong with Il Riffugio - we can't wait to go back!!!
Three couples (USA & Canada) rented the two tastefully furnished bedrooms with separate modern baths in the main house and also the beautiful apt w loft and kitchen and living area in the back of the building for 8 days while we explored all of Tuscany and Chianti regions. There are not enough superlative words to describe our stay here. The house is a restored monastery, beautifully done, super comfortable (the beds are soooo comfy) and wonderfully decorated. We so enjoyed the company of our hosts, Bill & John, as we sat in their garden, sipping coffee or wine. Our breakfasts were delicious each morning and the wine served by Bill and John at the end of our long days sightseeing was always wonderful. But, the best of all, was the company of Bill & John, who made certain we were always comfortable and happy! They are a wealth of information, steering us to various little towns and sights; helping us navigate the trains and always full of recommendations as to where to eat! They set us up with a fabulous vineyard tour of a 6th generation family making wine and making olive oil on their large estate. What a feast we had there! The highlight of our 3 weeks touring Italy was our stay here at Hidden Jewel!!! I highly recommend!!!! We already miss the great company of our hosts and hope to return someday for a more leisurely stay!!!!
