Matfield Station in a comfortable and well stocked place with views of the rolling green hills of the Flint Hills - gorgeous. We so enjoy sitting outside in the evening watching the stars as they can only be seen when city lights are far away. The sound of the crickets and cicadas, together with fireflies blinking on and off adds to the charm. And then there are the trains. They can be heard from quite a distance as they approach and then appear with roaring speed. We happen to love this, but for those worried about the noise, it is not too loud when inside. We slept well and love waking to the morning light spreading over the hills.
Very clean, well kept, unique little property with stunning views of the flint hills. Make sure you pack a pair of earplugs for the trains while you are sleeping though. I am already planning my next getaway and it will include staying here. Nice private deck off the back, lots of light indoors and windows, rocker out front on porch overlooking the flint hills perfect for morning coffee. Keller Wine and Feed a good place to eat that I will go back to , Ad Astra restaurant in Strong City.... only if you don't mind waiting an hour for your food on a Friday night.
The pictures are accurate, I would recommend this property to friends, nice little antique shops in Cottonwood Falls. Music outdoors on Friday nights in Cottonwood falls about 15min away.
We were looking for peace and quiet and we definitely found it at Matfield Green. My husband liked the historical nature of the building and the area. We both loved the solitude (except for when the trains went by!) There were lots of opportunities in the area for hiking which we would have loved to take advantage of if it hadn't been so incredibly hot during our stay. We did enjoy lots of "porch sitting" and bird watching. The kitchen was as fully equipped as advertised and I could have prepared a full meal, if I had wanted. We will definitely be back when the weather is more conducive to hiking.
If you love the Flint Hills, if you enjoy simple and clean accommodations that allow you to do your own cooking, if you love train watching, this is the perfect place. This was our second stay, and we'll certainly be back. Note on the trains: They don't blow their horns unless you stand on the back patio and wave at the engineer; otherwise they just rumble through--a deep vibration we enjoyed.
Matfield Station was a great place to stay for a couple of nights. At first my friend and I thought of staying only one night but we are so glad we decided to stay two nights. We found everything at the Casita easy going especially since we brought some food and drinks along with us to cook in the casita. Unfortunately, it was too cold for us to use the grill outside but we found everything we needed in the kitchen. The bed was very comfy and the room spacious. The heated floors were superb. We were surprised to find the trains really run quite often throughout the day and night! It's good to know those train tracks are still being used. Despite waking up a few times at night from the trains passing by, the bed and the house were so comfy and quiet that I quickly fell back asleep. We hiked both days in the nearby National Tallgrass Prairie and loved eating at Ad Astra in nearby Strong City, KS. Just make sure you know their hours! ...by 10pm the bar is closed.
We came to Matfield Station to experience the Flint Hills and the nearby Pioneer Bluffs Fall Festival. All three -- the Station, the Flint Hills, and the Festival -- were extremely enjoyable. As far as accommodations, you couldn't do better than this fully equipped "casita" with everything provided except groceries. The rumble of the nearby trains was a fun addition (no horn blowing by these trains, as there's no crossroad nearby), and the walking paths to the south (all the way into town) were a neat adventure, too. We highly recommend Matfield Station.
