Great property, the beach unusable
First, Leticia and Felipe, the on-site team, we’re excellent, friendly, efficient and overall great. If you bring the ingredients, Leticia and Felipe can grill steaks, make chilaquiles, guacamole, beans, salads, fresh juices. The property is really nice, open, in great condition. But, same as most of Quintana Roo beaches, this one, unlike the property description, is loaded with sargassum. Deep with sargassum. And plastic trash. No long walks on the beach until it’s cleaned.
Arriving at Elefante Volador is like arriving in Paradise
This is the most beautiful house in the middle of nowhere with a stretch of beach and coastline where you will not see another soul. Elefante Volador is a work of art, an architecturally designed house with incredible sense of shape, style and colour with interesting Mayan artefacts. Lying in the hammock in the palapa gazing out across the secluded garden and swaying palms to the Caribbean is really one of life's great experiences and a memory I will carry with me for a long time. The caretakers Letitia and Felipe are delightful and nothing is too much trouble for them. They are on hand to look after you whenever you want and will produce wholesome, home cooking. I recommend their fish dishes. For more exotic food the restaurants and bars in the boutique hotel stretch in Tulum are fabulous, particularly in the Southern end. Elefante Volador is a 30-40 minute drive from this stretch and over an hour from Tulum town. We did not find the road in the Biosphere too difficult at all. We would recommend you get cash in Tulum town on the way to Elefante Volador as when we were there most restaurants along the boutique hotel stretch would not accept cards and the ATMs were not working. The sea was rough when we were and this stretch of coastline has a vast amount of seaweed and a lot of plastic rubbish. It did not spoil it for us but was a reminder that we must try to reduce plastic waste. One of the great highlights was a boat trip in the lagoon to see crocodiles, spoonbills and other nesting birds and to swim in the mangrove canals. I could not recommend this more highly. It is about a 4-5 hour trip in a small boat for max 6 people and can be organised by the house via email. Absolutely wonderful! Staying at Elefante Volador was perfection and being in the Biosphere gave us a window into what this stretch of coastline must have been like 30 years ago before the arrival of mass tourism. I cannot believe our good fortune in finding this house. I wish I was still there.....
Wonderful Villa in the Sublime Sian Ka'an
This is an extraordinary part of the world and Villa Elefante is in a prefect location to explore the biosphere. It is about half way between Tulum and Punta Allen. We took a day trip to Punta Allen and had a wonderful seafood lunch in this small fishing village. However, you are best to rent a 4x4 to make this trek.
The beach is secluded and calm, the villa is located midway on a small bay. The grounds are landscaped and well maintained. We didn't see another soul on the beach. Plenty of beach chairs, hammocks and netted lounging beds to enjoy the outdoor experience.
The villa is simple but with architecturally sophistication. It is tastefully decorated and full of interesting artifacts with two bedrooms downstairs and one up. Roof top deck for reading or lounging after shower. The house is well kept, clean and everything works. The caretakers visit often to check on any needs you may have. They are very friendly and accommodating.
Overall, this was great experience. The logistics were simple and relaxed. No problems, no complications.
Thank you Joanne is a pleasure to have you as a guest !
Beautiful isolated retreat
Leticia and Felipe were wonderful caretakers/cooks. Yes, the drive is somewhat lengthy, but is part of the fun. The house is very artsy with great different environs to hang out. The only problem, and it’s a considerable one, is that the entire Riviera coast was innundated with sargasso weed which prohibited beach usage in front of the villa and beyond; a beach walk was not possible. We were able to travel to clearer areas however. We brought our snorkeling equipment and never used it. Still, we would not hesitate to go back. but only if the weed situation is not present.
Thank you Martin , was a pleasure to have you as a guest !
Unfortunately sea weed or better sargasso coming from Sargasso Sea is a entirely Carribean problem, we do not have sea weed during winter when the sea temperature is a little low, and we hope will go away soon as the scientist predict ...
Mean time at list we will have beautiful beaches as the sea weed contribute to build the beach and fight erosion . Hope we will see you again when the sea will be back to be cristal clear as use to be untill 3 years ago ! ciao thank you best Giuli
Remote and comfortable tranquility
Elefante Volador is an absolutely stunning house in an absolutely stunning location. The ocean is 50 meters away in the middle of the jungle and you see plenty of wildlife the whole time. The house is very comfortable with a personal and intriguing style and design. Just the fact that there are electricity, hot water and even internet in this very remote location is a wonder.
The caretakers, Felipe and Letizia are extremely friendly, helpful and great cooks. We had two dinners made by them, grilled fish (huuge fish in vegetables with fajitas and salsa) and shrimps with rice… splendid food. They also cleaned every day and kept the house and the location in perfect condition…
So this house is perfect for someone that looks to come close to nature, find solitude and peace and just be at one place in a very comfortable manner. But, with that said, it is not a house that fits everyone.
First of all; it is very remote and at the beginning of the season (november/december) the road can be in a very bad condition. It took us about 90 minutes of bumpy ride from Tulum to get to the house. We had a rented SUV so we were fine, but with a more "normal" car it would probably take even longer. When the road is in good condition, it is a smooth ride, but at the time of our stay it had not been repaired yet. The good thing about the roads status is that there is very little traffic, you really are alone.
Secondly; the house is not an all-inclusive and you have to pay attention to how energy, water and waste is handled. For us this was not at all a problem since we try to be aware of how much energy, water and waste we produce and handle. But if you are not accustomed to think like that, this house and location might be a challenge. But all this is clearly described in the presentation of the house.
To summarize: for us it was perfect; a family of five with grown children, just looking for place to hang out, sunbath, swim and read books while sipping at cold wine or beer from the refrigerator. I will never forget the sunrises <3
An amazing property in front of the beach.
The house has a simple and refined decoration with beautiful objects and fabrics from all over the world .
You can lounge everywhere, from the living room with lots of multicolor pillows to your private paradise beach. I have never experienced in my life such a soft sand. My favourite spot is the terrace where you can see the sunrise and sunset light. Speechless.
Leticia, the caretaker, is an excellent cooker and Felipe, the gardener, can also prepare an amazing BBQ. Do not forget to ask them for fresh lobsters or fresh fish , they can call the fisherman and check the availability —
The best experience so far, is to swim alone within a 4 km bay, no visible neighbours and the house stands alone on the beach. It looks like a real miracle.
No people around. Just this lovely home where you can have a hot shower and in the meanwhile listen to some good music with good internet signal !
Definitely the place to be in the Sian Kaan Bio Reserve.
See you soon.
Thank you Rocio,
I often swim alone in the bay and i think exactly the same ! So please you enjoy !
KITE, Schnorcheln. Sonnenbad, Strand zu Fuß, zu erforschen .......
