Secluded Hawaiian jungle
This house appears to be in the middle of the jungle, you really can’t see the other houses, but is only a short drive to town. The house is lovely with the typical jungle patina. The coqui frogs were a bit rambunctious at night however. You might need earplugs!
Magical - Living in Paradise
Magical! The Nightly symphony from the tropical forest was incredibly peaceful. This home had it all: from the upper balcony a view of the ocean, from the property edge a few of the river, both relaxing ocean and rivers sounds perfectly blended with beautiful bird and frog sounds - creating an amazing symphony. (the frogs actually sound like birds - truly beautiful)...and all while viewing the varying foliage of a tropical rain forest. Relaxing on the porch, absorbing all the sight and sounds was complete tranquility.
We have rented many homes and this one was superior. Beautiful wood throughout, a large, furnished porch around 3/4 of the home, outdoor shower, kitchen was stocked with basic items (a big plus to have salt, pepper, mayo, paper towels, citronella candles, ice chest, beach chairs, etc) and all the necessary items to prep food. The decor felt very warm and inviting.
Our contact person was extremely helpful and responsive; The directions were very clear - follow them exactly and you will arrive at a most peaceful destination!
Beautiful jungle paradise!
Great place to relax after a day at the beach. So much wildlife, we saw wild pigs, an egret, a muscove duck, cows, many geckos; all from the decks which had wonderful seating. The inside of the house is a woodworkers’ delight. House was very clean with lots of little needs taken care of. This is our 4th or 5th stay since 2009. Love the Mango house. CJ and friends.
Really cute house in the jungle. Host was great!
The house had everything we needed with beach toys and the location was great. Only a 30 minute drive to the resort areas with incredible beaches. Info sheet in the house was great. Detailed info provided about many beaches. Be aware that this house is in a forest that gets lots of rain so the house is a little humid inside. Frogs are loud at night which is part of the charm of staying in a a jungly area in Hawaii.
Awesome Place Hidden Away in the Jungle!
Before booking this house, I read the variety of comments that seemed to range from uninhabitable to absolute paradise. It made me curious what we would find when we arrived. Sure enough, I see where the "uninhabitable" comments come from and am pleased to know that that particular brand of tourist will leave this place alone and available for me to go back!
If you've got a sense of adventure, prefer the sounds of frogs and critters chirping over the sounds of car engines and back up beepers, and you long for lush beautiful surroundings and don't mind the rain that comes with it, this place is an absolute gem. We were beyond satisfied with this rental and would return in a heartbeat. The owner and the host were very easy to contact and responsive to our questions.
Mahalo, Mango House! We'll see you again.
Mahalo again Josh and friends.
We hope to host you again soon!
Not ready for prime time
The Mango House has great potential, but we found so much that wasn't livable about it that we had to check out the second day and scramble to book something else on the Big Island. Two of the kitchen windows would not crank closed all the way; the cranking mechanisms were corroded, the handles fell off when we tried to seal them, and there were leaves and dirt collected in the corners between the screens and the windows so obviously they had been stuck open for some time. This allowed what appeared to be a rat to chew right through the accessible screens during the night and enter the kitchen, eating our food and leaving droppings on our clothing in the bedroom. One actually ran down the stairway in front of us when we were tidying up after dinner one evening. (We've had mice in our house; this was not a mouse.) The pillowcases were stained; the smoke alarm was missing its face and was obviously inoperable; the house phone was not working and our cell service was spotty; the microwave was not working and all the clocks and appliances were blinking, having apparently experienced a power outage; and the house does not have its address number anywhere on the road that is the only access to it. We were driving and then walking up and down this road in the rain when we arrived, trying to figure out where this place was; thankfully we finally reached the housekeeper who told us how to get to it, but we would never have found it on our own. It is completely secluded, off the beaten path, and no specific directions were offered prior to our arrival that would have pointed this out. One of the kitchen cabinets was full of what appeared to be construction trash and sticky traps. The network name and password provided to us to access the internet was incorrect. Fortunately, completely different information was listed in documents we found in the house that did allow us to access it, but again, it was unreliable. Two out of the three track lights in the living room were burned out. The entertainment system didn't work. In short, this house presented not just a host of inconveniences and rather deplorable conditions, but it was a thoroughly unsafe environment. We would have loved the decks, the outdoor shower, the secluded atmosphere--but in our opinion, and we told the property managers/housekeepers this--the place needs a thorough going over, top to bottom, before it is offered to anyone else.
While we can’t control every unforeseen circumstance, we are accountable for our response. In this instance, upon being notified our manager drove out to the property immediately at 9:00 at night to set a trap. By the following day we had dispatched with the offending culprit. Unfortunately our tenant was still uncomfortable, so she was reimbursed for her stay. We have had no unwanted visitors since then, though we remain vigilant.
