Beautiful house, will bags of character. The house had everything we needed, with its own private pool which was just the right size. Location was excellent in the heart of Jarnac so not too far to walk to the local shops and restaurants. The larger shops were just a short drive away. The river was close by which offered kayaking for the kids and was just lovely to walk by. I would thoroughly recommend the property for families.
It was exactly what it says on the tin: a spacious well sorted house, and a great private garden. If you want night life in Jarnac town then forget it, if you want to stroll out (2-3 minutes) to good places to drink at lunch or before tea, a great little market for excellent food shopping, pretty walks along the river, bigger towns in an easy short drive away then this is for you. The house worked brilliantly for two couples - with plenty of space for a third couple if needed. The only potential gripe - there was no tin opener - however there's no need to buy any tinned food with so much quality fresh produce available in the market hall! (including great fresh fish)
Would happily go again
Maison Dix-Neuf lies in the heart of the small town of Jarnac which is situated on the right north bank of the Charente.
This stunning villa is directly opposite the birth home of one of France's former presidents; Francois Mitterrand and is well-located for visits to the Cognac region and surrounding towns and villages.
Courvoisier is actually in the town centre - a short stroll along the rue. However, instead we opted for visits to the local sellers. The passion for brandy was tipping off their Gallic tongues and was a delight to behold and experience.
It was May. The weather was changeable. Beaches were about an hour‘s drive. However we liked the villa so much, with swimming pool, a tad cold I thought, and its lovely kitchen, that we pretty much were embedded for the whole week.
The kitchen was a delight and the cuisine dished up was light years ahead of the competition.
Jarnac’s gastronomy may be found in its high-quality brandy, but its restaurants sadly left us saying a big - Non. Surprisingly for France, those we tried were a bit of a 'tranchee gastronomique'. (Perhaps in high season the real chef’s clock on.)
In short… Dix and Neuf add up to ‘excellent’, and with new owners Phil and Susanna dishing out the welcome packs there is little doubt in my mind that Maison Dix-Neuf will book up fast in future.
We drove from London to Folkestone (1hr15mns) then Euro tunnel (35mns). The journey down to Jarnac took 8 1/2 hours - due to getting lost mostly, and we did take a short break. (Normally 7hrs non-stop.) My advice would be to do a stopover which we did on the return. We stayed one night at Chartres, which was a beautiful cosmopolitan delight. The food here was excellent.
The character and style of the house was stunning and the kitchen and general facilities were very good but the major disappointment was the road junction to the side of the property (hence only three stars) which caused a huge amount of noise and made it impossible to sit peacefully in the garden. There is a stop sign on the road by the house which meant that heavy vehicles, lorries and tankers were constantly using their air brakes and then revving their engines to pull away. I expected some noise as we were in town but this was like being next to a bus station - I counted on average two heavy vehicles passing a minute.
The other small grumbles were not having two sets of keys which was difficult as we were two couples wanting to go out separately, and the bed linen in the second bedroom smelt of cigarette smoke. Although we didn't have children with us, I would hesitate to bring very small children here because there were trailing wires to lamps and devices and one electric socket by the patio door had pulled away from the wall and presented quite a hazard for little ones.
The property is old and the floorboards creek when walked on so not recommended if you are a light sleeper.
Jarnac is an attractive town with some lovely riverside walks and bike rides and a good canoe hire place on the other side of the river. The countryside is worth exploring with lots of little towns and good restaurants offering a set menu for around thirteen Euros.
Stunning house - the strret side looks really plain but the garden side reveals a jewel in the centre of Jarnac. Every thing we need (a little warmth in the pool would have been even better!- but soon to be fixed I believe). The interior decor is stunning like stepping ito a magazine! Lovely welcome pack and English house keeper. You can swim in the river, kayak and taste Cognac all excellent.
Lovely and charming house, all the mod cons but retaining a 19th century feel, wife and daughters were enchanted by the house when we first arrived! Great location only a few minutes work into the town, great patisserie a minute away and the river, great for walks and sailing, was literally less than a minute. Peaceful and quiet, spent a few evenings dining and lounging in the garden. Thoroughly recommend for families and perfect place for a relaxing holiday.

The house has a heating system for the swimming pool there would be an extra charge to have this switched on for tour arrival.
