The location of this unit is fantastic & is its best attribute. We were able to walk everywhere & felt safe in this neighborhood. Close to many famous attractions, shopping, entertainment etc. However the unit itself left much to be desired. It's neither stunning nor luxury as the title states. Firstly, it is not as depicted in the photos. The sofa was a dark brown, overstuffed ultra-suede type, that was quite saggy; not the nice beige one in the picture. The curtains were not the vertical blinds as shown, but instead were thin brownish sheers which did not provide much night time privacy nor ability to block daylight in the morning. It is described as a 1 bedroom, but loft would be more accurate because it has an open wall & no door in the "bedroom" area. We wanted a separate room for our party of 3 as one of us snores. At least the noisy air-conditioner, which cooled well, helped to drown out the snoring a bit. The shower curtain was stained & not the one depicted in the photo. The tub had moldy grout in the corners. Otherwise, the unit seemed reasonably clean. Another issue was with the wifi, which was one of the reasons for selecting this unit. It did not work when we arrived & Nancy the housekeeper tried very hard for about 1 hour to get it going without success. Simon came on our 3rd day there & spent almost 2 hours trying to get it to work. He finally did, but it was another 2 hours of our time wasted since we had to wait for him as there was only one key to the unit, so we couldn't leave. Having only one key was also an inconvenience the rest of the time too.
It wouldn't take much to improve this place: newer furnishings, esp. the sofa, new window coverings that block light, new shower curtain, new bed linens, pillows, blankets etc., & esp. new towels. Things seemed clean but dated & worn, so we weren't really sure. The 2 people we dealt with: Nancy & Simon were very nice & tried to be helpful, but it was still a time waster for us when we had so much to do and explore. It seemed strange to have to sign an agreement to rent for 1 month when we stayed for 6 days. Probably really a "sublet" & part of the original rental agreement for the renter. Not sure if "Florence" exists as we never spoke with her or met her despite the listing stating that she "loves meeting & interacting with people from around the world". This made it seem more quaint & personal, but in fact was 1 of several units managed by Simon. Felt this was very misleading.
For the price we figured it would be simple and it was. There was plenty of room and could sleep 4-5. It has 2 double beds and a pull out couch. It’s 3 stories and has 800 sq feet and is clean. On the main level where you walk in is the updated kitchen, a 3 chair dining table and the bathroom. Up the stairs to the first floor is the great room. A nice full wall of windows, (with a very thin drape), a couch, and a (bouncy & thin) bed, another small table with chairs, (card table type) along with a nice size flat screen tv with cable. Sadly, the internet never worked. We rebooted the router and wifi multiple times and had Nancy & Max (the appointed “go to” people) try. Their answer was that Roadrunner was out in the entire area. Really in NYC for 3 days? So the entire time we didn’t have internet. Boo! Up another flight of stairs to the top floor was a (very firm) double bed. It was nice because the sunlight & street noise was buffered by the wall. It would have been nicer with better pillows. The pillows were old and flat. I went to get another one out of the closet but it had yellow stains on it so I opted for the pillows on the other bed and doubled up. I didn’t take the cases off to check these because I felt it was better not to know if they were yellow. Our biggest disappointment was on the first night. When we stepped out to go to Walgreens right after getting the keys and signing a “month” contract even though staying there for only 3 nights? We went to grab some groceries and necessities. When we came back to the duplex our keys would not work! We tried everything we could and even stopped people in the hall in case we were “not familiar” with the way the system worked. Anyway, no one could get us in. We even knocked on residents doors, the “super” lived next door but would not answer the door. We had groceries, even ice-cream, and finally called Nancy and told her we were locked out. She lives in the Bronx and said she would be there in 20 min. (more like an hour and 20!) Then when she came she couldn’t get the keys to work either. She had to call Max, who shows up later and he cannot get in either. They finally called a locksmith and we got in quick. 3 plus hours sitting on the floor of a stinky hot hallway was not a fun way to spend 6:00-9:15 pm on my first night. Bottom line: Great location if upgrade pillows and get the wifi on. Oh, the tub was eh.. slow draining and has some black algae in one corner but what do you expect? Not the Waldorf!
