If you are looking for a fun stay right on the lake this is it. If you want modern and new - keep looking. It an old time lake experience in a rustic but cozy cottage that sits right on the lake. Yes -down 60 steps (not recommended form small children or elderly). The owner Mike goes out of his way to make it a comfortable stay. Even adding a stove pipe for a cold night and providing a wonderful Amish baked bread upon arrival. Loved sleeping in the bed and seeing the lake and waves just feet away. His two labs were great fun and provided a warm welcome. The fire pit was perfect for the evenings and the long dock had a beautiful view down the lake. The location is prefect near many wineries and a great gourmet hot dog stand. Can't wait till next time.
We had an amazing time! When we arrived, Mike greeted us and helped us carry everything down to the cabin, actually, he carried the majority of it. Once we walked down I was amazed how accurately everything was described. Somewhat isolated and plenty of piece and quiet from the outside world. We brought our dog, buddy, on his first vacation and he loved swimming and playing with Mikes dogs.
The second day he cooked us a delicious lakeshore dinner of trout on the grille, complimented by corn on the cob and salt potatoes! He went completely out of his way to make sure we enjoyed our vacation.
The fishing was great also.. We caught 4 large lake trout, lots of bullheads and small mouth bass, 2 nice rainbow trout and one Monster 12 lbs. , 28" brown trout, all only 50-100 yards from the dock! Perfect location!
The lake frontage was perfect! Being right on the water kept us very occupied, especially with the canoe and kayaks supplied. Perfect for relaxing , cooking and having a campfire right on the water. (mike even supplied the firewood for us!). At this time of year, the sunrise was directly across the water and rising over the mountains while you drank your morning coffee.
The cottage was rustic but very nice and everything we were looking for (exactly as described)! We all had an amazing time and took home some great memories and a freezer full of fish! I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing and stress free week!
The owner is very kind and generous man but his cabin should not be a rental property at this time. There is a set of stairs (58 steps) that are almost vertical with no lighting, slippery, unstable and no lighting - the stairs are the only access to the property. The stairs made it very difficult and unsafe for our children in the evening hours and we were unable to invite our older relatives and young cousins to the property because they could not manage the stairs. If the stairs were completed replaced, made less vertical, and fully lit this would improve the property immensely.
There was no lock on the front door of the cabin and no locks on the windows which left us feeling unsafe and insecure. We needed to pack up our valuables and bring them with us ever time we left the cabin. And we just had to trust that we would be safe while we slept.
The front porch of the cabin had two wasps nests and one bee hive and it was very unwelcoming and a bit scary. After we told the owner about the wasps and bees he immediately took care of the problem.
One evening when we arrived home there was a bat on the front porch that we had to scare away to enter the house and then when we got inside there was a live bird flying around that took us sometime to get out the front door.
One morning we woke up to no water whatsoever - no way to flush the toilet, wash our hands, etc. The owner was able to correct the problem.
There was no drinking water in the cabin, you must buy bottled water - we were not aware of this.
We found out after we had booked the property that we had to provide our own lines and towels.
When we arrived at the cabin it appeared that it hadn't been cleaned for awhile and upon further inspection the bathroom was pretty bad - very dirty toilet, hair in the sink, very dirty floors. The rugs in the cabin hadn't been cleaned in a very long time (full of dog hair) and we needed to put them outside. And the floors in the entire cabin needed to be moped - lots of dirt. The dishwasher was broken, one of the two lights in the kitchen did not work, the microwave was extremely dirty.
Again, the owner of the property is a very nice man and very helpful but his property is not ready to be a rental.
Me and my active family enjoyed our weeklong stay at the Rustic Cottage. We enjoyed being lakeside - the kayaks and rowboat, as well as the fishing and swimming. It also served as a good jumping off point for wineries, Watkins Glen, the Corning Glass museum, Taughonnack and the Painted Bar stables. Mike was a great host, checking in with us often, as well as inviting us up a day early to see the fireworks on the lake. We'd consider renting again.
