We spent 2 weeks in that wonderful house. It's much nicer than the photos! The bathrooms are great, the beds are fantastic, kitchen has best equipment, terrace and pool are fabulous! We are living together with geckos, gigantic grasshoppers, lots of birds – and some mosquitos. Every time well protected by "Max", the lovely dog of Trevor. If you're looking for a place with a unique and spectacular view, for a place for relaxing – Trevor's house is the best choice you ever can make!
If you're looking for a typical caribbean high class resort with the opportunity for exclusive shopping, nightlife, expensive restaurants and beaches, where drinks are served at the deckchairs you'll be wrong on Tobago. This island is really unique in its original situation.
We have just returned from the most amazing 12-days on the island - and the highlight was undoubtedly our dreamlike villa.
Villa Xanadu is located high up in the rainforest above Parlatuvier, Tobago which provided us with the most stunning views through the tree canopies, down to the beach of off into the abyss of the Caribbean sea. The villa itself is very spacious, and would easily facilitate 4 visitors. The decking has a variety of comfy chairs where you can while away hours while the infinity pool is just the icing on the cake - cool, clean, deep and with stunning views.
Every day we were enchanted by the sights and sounds of the rainforests, and even though we weren't twitchers before hand, we certainly enjoyed watching the wildlife living in the same space as you are. From Gekkos to Parrots, you get it all at Xanadu! We can not recommend this villa enough.
Thank you Trevor for making our stay so special.
Trevor Patience Villa Xanadu is Out of this World, up in the tree tops with the most amazing wildlife and view you can possibly imagine. Dinosaur sounding birds that wake you up in the morning, hummingbirds and parrots that join you for lunch and bats that swoop down around you as night falls.
We were warmly welcomed and Trevor was very helpful and made sure we had a good time and had everything we needed during our stay. The villa is really something special, very much like a spacious tree house but at the same time clean and safe. We had our two year old running around barefoot around the area and there were never any problems except for some hungry mosquitos. Kitchen, bathroom, and shower facilities were great. In both up and down stairs shower you could gaze out into the lush rainforest and also down towards the ocean. There is a lovely, big chill-out area with a refreshing rainwater pool. And the waterfall is just a 5-10 minute walk down a beautiful path. The closest beach was also lovely and barely any tourists around with two simple restaurants that served good food, manly fish.
We recommend staying here! Enjoy!
I was so excited to book the Villa Xanadu based on the wonderful reviews. We arrived there for our 3 night stay and were initially enchanted. The view is stunning, the private infinity pool is lovely, and it felt like being in a treehouse. Trevor showed us around and then told us he would be leaving to visit a friend on another part of the island for several days. Well, things started to go south the first night when we were swarmed by mosquitoes, moths, locusts, and other insects as soon as dark set in. The living room is outside and there is literally no way to escape the bugs except under the mosquito net over the bed upstairs, as there are no window screens anywhere. There were also geckos pooping everywhere and bats darting in and out of the house after the bugs. We were preparing to take a dip in the pool when we heard someone crashing around farther down the hill and saw them wandering around with a flashlight. No idea who it was or what they were doing, but it put us on edge, especially when we went to bed and realized that there is absolutely NO way whatsoever to lock or secure the house. Every singe door and window is basically a sheet of plywood with the flimsiest of latches, and one entire wall of the downstairs is made of swinging panels that don't latch at all, so even if you closed every door and window anyone could walk right in, and it made it hard to relax and go to sleep. I hope it is safe up there, but after seeing someone wandering around the jungle with a flashlight earlier it creeped us out, especially since Trevor wasn't there and we didn't see the guard/groundskeeper he mentioned (Ranger) the entire trip. When we left to go out during the day we were extremely nervous about leaving any valuables, again, as there is absolutely no way to lock or secure the house. I am not an overly nervous traveler, but I am not at all familiar with the area and Trevor was away, so it felt weird to leave passports and money in what essentially amounts to an open air pavilion. Between the bugs, bats, geckos pooping everywhere, and the rat in kitchen I could not get out of there soon enough. Also, no drinking water is provided and Trevor told us to boil the tap water ourselves. I am okay with rustic but for that price I expect a lot more (like drinking water and basic security). I didn't feel safe or comfortable and would not stay there again nor would I recommend it to anyone.
A beautiful property on a lovely part of the island. The view from the master bedroom is amazing, while lying in bed you can look down across the rain forest onto the bay below, it's quite a sight to wake-up to in the morning. The house itself is immaculate, the pictures do not do it justice. The infinity pool is a good size, deep and well maintained; there's an open air sun deck with outdoor lounge, TV, sofas and chaise longue. If you're feeling uninhibited you can shower in the open air, or alternatively the master bathroom has wide open views into the virgin rain forest.
Trevor was a fabulous host. He was very flexible in extending our stay for another night at short notice, and was on hand (his home is just a stone's throw away) to help with any little queries we had about local restaurants, etc.
Trevor currently has three rental properties. Xanadu sits at the top of the hill and has a commanding view down on the rest of the estate ("Patience"). All three of the rental properties look charming, but Xanadu was another league. Our 12 night vacation started at the 5* Trinidad Hyatt, and moved onto Coco Reef (reportedly the best beach resort on Tobago). Xanadu put the rest of the trip in the shade by quite a margin; when we arrived the wife likened it to Branson's Necker Island, it's that spectacular.
Car hire strongly recommended, the estate is relatively secluded and there's not a great deal in the immediate area. You also need to be prepared to be woken by the birds, as flocks of Cocorico (the national bird of Tobago) are frequent visitors to this area, and just like the people they represent can be fairly spirited in the small hours!
We stayed for 2 weeks in October (sorry for the late review back to the rat race!!) We enjoyed everything about the experience. The house had everything we needed and more! It was very clean, plenty of towels and hot water were available. The swimming pool was just lovely and the perfect spot to chill and look at the stunning views over the sea or across the forest. Trevor and Ranger are great hosts and are there when needed but not at all intrusive. The waterfall was a pure delight and the walk was well worth it. Our visit was during the closed season but there was plenty of restaurants around the island to eat and they were all superb especially the amazing lobster at the Birdwatchers in Speyside! Be sure to visit the jetty in Paraltuvier and buy fresh fish or even better book one of the local fisherman to take you out and catch your dinner. A visit to this accommodation is a definite must I would visit again tomorrow given the opportunity!! Thank you for making our holiday so beautiful. Donna, Stuart, Dave and Rose.
