This property was amazing and the owners (with a house on the property as well-down the road) were also the most gracious hosts. There was one slight issue at our house which was beautiful and immaculate which they attended to thoroughly and immediately. We 4 all had a great time. The pond on the property is best as swimmable for dogs though it is clean if you don't mind typical pond "stuff."
Everything about this home was ideal for our family getaway. 6 people, 3 couples, fit very comfortable in the house, which has everything you need to feel right at home. Incredibly-well stocked kitchen has all the cookware and appliances you need for homemade meals. And there is plenty of room indoor and out to spread out and relax. The property itself is beautiful, we played frisbee on the sprawling lawn by the pond.
The location was great for us, as we wanted a quiet country setting that was close to the surrounding towns and activities. We walked across the street for a hike in Tivoli Bays, drove into Red Hook and Rhinebeck for meals and to see the towns, and made the 30-minute drive down to Hyde Park for the FDR museum.
We felt instantly relaxed in this home, and are already talking about going back!
This is a spacious, perfectly renovated, classic country home -- a perfect balance of contemporary and vintage, and just the kind of place you have in mind when seeking a secluded respite from city life. There's a massive fieldstone fireplace, state-of-the-art appliances in a new, magazine-worthy kitchen overlooking a family room with further views to the adjacent pond, picturesque barn and pastures beyond. It's heaven. Wide-plank, bleached oak floors give the house an updated feel, and each of the bedrooms are painted in soft, serene colors. The master bedroom features the largest and deepest soaking tub I've ever seen, and all the fixtures and hardware are new, beautifully designed and well-coordinated. It's clear that the owners place a premium on maintenance, landscaping and cleanliness -- the place is immaculate -- and equal attention to detail has been applied to the selection of vintage-style lighting fixtures and hardware. Multiple windows and full-size, sliding glass doors allow tons of natural light, cross-ventilation and access to three porches and/or deck spaces. New HVAC systems operate with barely a hum. Towels, books, linens, dishes, glassware: they've all been thoughtfully selected with an eye for design, completeness and lasting quality. If you're interested in privacy, toned-down luxe and a postcard-perfect setting that is private without being isolated, this is your house. You won't want to leave.
The photographs hardly do justice to this beautiful property in a tranquil setting. I slept in one of the bedrooms overlooking the pond, and although it was early February the light streamed in as I dressed in the morning. The house was warm and welcoming, very clean and superbly equipped--you could easily accommodate an extended family. We didn't have children with us, but if you did, I think the night lights upstairs would be as asset. With a separate sitting room, a room with television and soft lighting, and a large dining area with seating in front of an open fire, there was plenty of room for different activities. Before breakfast I took a walk each day in the woods near the pond. They've made a gentle path that weaves through the woods and over wetland on wooden walkways--never got my feet wet on the worst days!
I reached the location by train from New York and car, as it would be difficult to fully make use of the area without your own transport. I know the area somewhat, and thought the house was convenient for Red Hook, Rhinebeck, and Tivoli, as well as the Taconic. The Kingston Bridge is only a few minutes from the house, so we were able to reach Woodstock and places in the Catskills in a short time. The owners gave suggestions about where to buy organic vegetables, good places to eat (there are many restaurants in Red Hook and Rhinebeck, for a start, at a variety of prices) and were keen to make our stay comfortable and problem free. I took a number of short walks (60-90 minutes) in the Tivoli Bay area (virtually across the road) and in Ferncliff Park, which is close to Rhinebeck. I would certainly recommend this rental to anyone with an interest in the countryside, who wants luxury with simple elegance..
I am not sure about recommending this rental to pet owners, as we did not have a pet and I am not sure about the policy.
