Charming Place to holiday

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: September 23, 2011 Reisezeitraum: August 2011
Santa Maria is a wonderful place to stay in especially if you really need a good relaxing holiday. The house is very well equipped and very attractively done. We loved eating our breakfast out on the orangery every morining and listening to and looking at the birds, especally the bee eater ( as we were told ). The pictures of the pool do not give it justice: the surrounding garden has grown and is quite beautiful with the backdrop of the amazing Italian fortified home. Our children loved having all of the space and gardens to be roaming around in. We found the people in Sicily to be wonderful and so welcoming especially with children. We did a lot of snorkling with the children on Marinella beach and Zingaro Reserve, visiting the archeological sites is an absolute must. The food is delicious and I would highly recommed trying the orangina ( make sure you ask where to go for the best), the sea food is exceptional, dont miss the Mazarra fish market. Must visit Mazarra Del Vallo in the evening, they eat late but well worth the visit. Santa Maria is a special place, we really enjoyed it so much. When we left, after 2 weeks, we all wished we had a little longer!

Vermieter-Kommentar: One of the great assets of Santa Maria is the space available both inside the villa and in the various gardens - the walled orange grove, where you can pick oranges when in season or lemons all the year round, the formal gardens in front of the villa, the olive groves and best of all the colourful Mediterranean garden around the pool. We are very proud of this garden which was created only four years ago out of an abandoned field dotted with a few dead trees! Designed to provide shade and colour around the pool even at the hottest time of year, it now flourishes with hibiscus of all shades, frangipane, oleander, pomegranate trees, passion fruit vines, lavender and many other trees and shrubs, not to mention several varieties of exotic palms.
The house is very well equipped as we, the owners, use it a lot ourselves and have made sure that every comfort is available. Now that we are grandparents, we have families with small children very much in mind, so we have made sure that the villa is child-friendly and all necessary baby equipment is provided.
We love to cook, which is why we have installed air conditioning in the kitchen, making sure that the summer heat is no deterrent to spending time preparing meals for family and friends.
The town of Mazara itself has a wide range of excellent restaurants, pizzerias, bars and ice cream shops and the evening passegiata in summer goes on until the early hours of the morning.
As this guest has mentioned, the arancine - fried rice balls stuffed with meat sauce or ham and mozzarella - are not to be missed, and there is an abundance of fish and seafood on offer both in restaurants and at the local fish market.
We are confident that Santa Maria is what guests are looking for when they come to Sicily on holiday as we have had many returners and some even for the third time this year.

top october term break destination

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: December 4, 2011 Reisezeitraum: October 2011
This is the 2nd time we enjoyed Santa Maria in the last week of October. The spacious beautiful house is a hit with the children. As is the tennis court and the swimming pool. Pleasant temperatures, sunshine , while Britain becomes wet and cold. Nearly every day we drove down to the sandy beach next to Marinella, enjoying the sun and the sea. We also had a lovely time in the old town of Mazarro and frequented the local family run & very family friendly pizzeria for its lovely starters, pizzas and pasta dishes. I am sure we will be back again. My best memory this year is picking a lemon for the morning pancakes from a tree a few meters from our table amidst the orange grove.

Vermieter-Kommentar: Erik's very positive comments show that Sicily is to be enjoyed not just in the summer period.
Indeed the weather is still glorious in autumn and warm enough to swim, which is why we keep the pool at Santa Maria open until the end of October. This is also the best time to come if you wish to enjoy the beaches and local sights without the large numbers of visitors who come in summer. We look forward to welcoming Erik's family back yet again.

Magical Week in Sicily

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: May 4, 2011 Reisezeitraum: April 2011
We enjoyed a memorable week in Sicily and would thoroughly recommend Santa Maria. We felt like privileged guests at a grand country home. Our only regret is not having more time to spend in the house itself as the weather was very good and so we spent most of the week exploring the many places of interest in North West Sicily.

Our children loved Santa Maria especially the massive baths and squeezing their own orange juice for breakfast - from oranges they picked from the orange grove outside! We thought it a great base for exploring as well as being a luxurious haven for relaxing after one or two strenuous outings.

A great introduction to a fascinating island.

Vermieter-Kommentar: I'm so glad that Giorgio and his family enjoyed Santa Maria so much. The beauty of coming to Sicily in April is that the weather is warm but not too hot and there are still oranges on the trees, although the mandarins and grapefruit are over by the end of March. However even summer visitors can sit under the trees on the terrace and pluck a lemon for a gin and tonic, as the lemon trees bear fruit all year round. And Giorgio is right. There are so many fascinating places to visit nearby.

Santa Maria - August 2010

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: September 3, 2010 Reisezeitraum: August 2010
This is a truly beautiful place to stay. My sister and her family resided in Casa Nuova and so we shared the grounds with the tennis court and swimming pool. We really enjoyed the grounds, and the patios on each site were lovely for relaxing evening dining, surrounded by the fruit trees.
The pool area was very pleasant and a good place to sit with a book.
Santa Maria was beautifully decorated and maintained, with great attention to detail and well equipped. We were met by Nanette who showed us round attentively. Caroline has written a book about the restoration of Santa Maria and it was fascinating to read this while we were there.
The ancient sites of Selinunte and Segesta were very worthwhile visits, as was the hilltop town of Erice and seaside resort of Scopello. Mazara del Vallo was an interesting town with baroque architecture and several good restaurants. My husband found some good windsurfing nearby (details in the house). The only drawback for us in this less touristy area of Sicily, was that some of the beaches nearby were not kept very clean, although the sea itself was fine. Car hire is essential for a holiday here, and in August the rental companies sell out quickly, so it's worth organising this as early as possible. We drove over to here from the east side of Sicily, and then flew home from Trapani.

So lovely we came back again

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: July 16, 2010 Reisezeitraum: June 2010
Our first stay at Santa Maria was in 2007 with our two teenage daughters and we all had such a wonderful time we vowed we would return. We have just returned from our second stay in June 2010, this time with our younger daughter, now 21, and a posse of her friends. I must admit I was a little worried that my memory might have become rose tinted in the intervening years since our first visit. I shouldn't have had any doubts because everything was just as wonderful as it was on our first visit. The house and it's gardens have a lovely relaxing atmosphere, and there is so much space that you can escape if you want to. Nanette is there when you need her which is very reassuring. We enjoyed having the opportunity to read extensively, there are enough books in the house to keep you going for the longest of holidays, swim, play a little tennis and explore the area again, especially Seliunte, Segesta, Eraclea Minor where we discovered a lovely little restaurant down on the beach and for the first time Mozia. It is just a shame we had to come home and return to work. Our daughter's friends were all thrilled that they had been invited, our elder daughter was rather miffed she couldn't come as well, but it was just too far for her to travel as she now lives in Australia.

Vermieter-Kommentar: Thank you Jo for this very positive review. It is always so gratifying when guests enjoy themselves so much that they come back again. I'm glad your family appreciated the library as well as the large gardens, tennis and pool. As many guuests have found, there are so many good books to read at Santa Maria that there is absolutely no need to bring books with you or even an electronic reading device.
I agree with Jo that there is also so much to see in the area that it can hardly all be done in one short week. I'm glad that you managed to see the Punic island of Mozia as it is one of my favourite trips. You may be interested to know that one of the islands in the lagoon is also called Santa Maria and belongs to a cousin of Marcello's. The Whitaker Museum on Mozia displays the marble staue of the Youth of Motya, found in the lagoon and one of the most beautiful examples of Greek art in Sicily.

Holidaying at Villa Santa Maria

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: July 7, 2010 Reisezeitraum: June 2010
We chose Sicily as a holiday destination as my children, now 21, 19 and 14, wanted pasta, pizza and Italian ice cream. In addition, we all wanted to go somewhere none of the 5 of us had been before. We are fond of islands, love the beach, and the kids wanted their own swimming pool and tennis court...hey presto... the Villa Santa Maria!
I should point out that my husband and I have very stressful jobs, and we wanted somewhere quiet where we could relax and unwind. In general we are not keen on hotels or holiday villages/parks where we have little privacy and -in the nicest possible way-have to put up with the rest of the world!
So, we were impressed with the look, feel and sight of Santa Maria from the first time we saw the picture in the brochure. The owner replied to my emails very promptly, and we generally felt confident we were on to a winner. We were not to be disappointed.
The first sight of Santa Maria is quite awesome. The pretty driveway lined with tall trees and bouganvillea makes an impressive entrance. The building itself ressembles an old castle, and is set within a beautiful tropical garden. Once inside, the internal courtyard is stunning, with an old well in the centre and hung with brightly coloured geraniums. The large apartment we stayed in, has been charmingly restored with much attention to detail, beautiful marble and floor tiles, very tasteful decor and antiques. The kitchen is well equipped and we produced sumptuous pasta dishes on a daily basis, which along with local tomato, mozzerella and basil salad, was food fit for a king! The kids were in heaven!
Outside the tennis court is superb. My two boys played for hours every day, with their father when he could stand the heat! The swimming pool is superb. Quite long enough to swim good lengths, and deep enough for jumping and diving in the deep end. The big olive tree provided perfect shade from the midday sun and several long, seriously competitive games of scrabble!
We didn't venture out very far. The supermarkets were fine for our needs, and not as expensive as France! We ate out twice in the local town, and had excellent food and wine, with friendly waiters, keen to discuss the UK's disastrous performance in the World Cup in pigeon english!
It was incredibly hot, and we greatly appreciated the fans, and the use of the air conditioning, something often not available in other houses we have rented.
I highly recommend Santa Maria to all wanting a peaceful, happy holiday!

Vermieter-Kommentar: Thank you Debbie for sharing your appreciation of Santa Maria with potential guests.
I do think one of the huge advantages of the villa is the combination of space and privacy it affords. The gardens are extensive, with the formal park in front of the villa, the Mediterranean garden with tropical plants surrounding the pool and the outlying olive groves and orchards.
The ground floor of Santa Maria is spread out over nearly 400 square metres with a television room and a library in addition to the living room, dining room and bedrooms.
Large as it is and surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see, guests have the security of Nanette and Silvio, who live on the upper floor and very discreetly take care of the building and help guests if necessary. For example when airports were closed in April due to volcanic ash fallout, Nanette gave the guests use of her computer and took them to a travel agent, acting as interpreter, to find alternative transport route back to the UK. So I think guests who come to Santa Maria have the best of many worlds - beautiful setting, great facilities from extremely well equipped kitchen to air conditioning in the bedrooms and kitchen, but especially the pool and tennis court, and support from resident co-owners if or when needed.

Fantastic

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: June 24, 2009 Reisezeitraum: June 2009
Our family and I stayed here from June 14th - 21st 2009. Casa Notre is absolutely fabulous all you could ask for, extremely homely, pool and tennis courts where a great hit with the children, interior/exterior is amazing - you could walk around it for days. The library was full of books that would keep you amused forever, the kitchen was equipped with everything you needed. Nanette who meets you on arrival was so helpful, a truly lovely person. The location of the castle was brillant too, great for sight seeing etc. We hope to return next year it was that good.
Empfohlen für:  Kulturinteressierte, Familien mit Teenagern, Familien mit kleinen Kindern, Romantikurlaub
Vermieter-Kommentar: Colette is right. There is plenty of space at Santa Maria both inside and outside. The rooms are large and outside there are several different gardens and orchards in addition to the walled orange grove. The library is extremely well stocked as we ourselves are avid readers and the kitchen so well equipped because we love to cook. Nanette, our sister-in-law, takes very good care of our guests.
The location of Santa Maria is ideal for visiting the lesser known western Sicily which is relatively quiet compared to the eastern coast. For example the amazing site of Selinunte,a Greek city founded in the 7th century BC is almost on our doorstep. History lovers will also want to vist Agrigento on the south west coast with its formidable Vale of Temples and stunning museum. The medieval hilltop town of Erice, famous for its Norman castle, fabulous views and mouth-watering pastries is a short drive away.
There are many beaches in the area and since Mazara is not a well known international tourist destination like Taormina or Siracusa, you may often find, if you visit out of season - July/August - that you have the beach to yourselves. Mazara is also well located for visiting the wonderful Aegades Islands, which can be reached by ferry or hovercraft from nearby Marsala or Trapani.
Since we are so close to the motorway, it takes only just over an hour to reach Palermo, a sightseeer's paradise.
Of course the whole of Sicily is famous for "la cucina" and the province of Trapani including Mazara excells in the freshest of fish cuisine, especially blue fin tuna and swordfish. The local speciality, which you will not find elsewhere, is handmade couscous dressed not with with meat or vegetables but with an exquisite fish sauce. There are many excellent restaurants nearby, including some dedicated to seafood and guests will find recommendations in the handbook we keep in the villa.
Not to be missed are Sicilian icecreams (the locals eat them in a bun!) or the fragrant lemon, mulberry or almond granitas - water ices - perfect for slaking your thirst under the Sicilian sun.

May 2009

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: June 2, 2009 Reisezeitraum: May 2009
Spent a week there at the end of May 2009, 4 adults two children (6 & 7). We all loved the villa.

Its easy to find and an easy drive from Palermo, if your flight lands too early then stop off at Sugesta on the way.

You have nearly half of the downstairs which provided plenty of space. In fact we had so much space roller blades should be provided for when you have forgotten something in the kitchen. We all enjoyed eating a meal in the garden or relaxing around the pool. There is something very satisfying sitting having a meal in an orange grove and I was very please about picking my own lemon for a gin and tonic in the evening.

The local town seemed like a usual small Italian town with all the usual fun of driving in Italy.

The local beaches didn't seem to great but that didn't matter at all as we just relaxed around the pool and as a result the kids now want a pool in the back garden at home.

Etna can be done in a day but its a long day and the site an Selinunte is an easy drive but I recommend the buggies that ferry you around when you get there.

I would certainly recommend Villa Santa Maria
Empfohlen für:  Kulturinteressierte, Familien mit kleinen Kindern
Vermieter-Kommentar: Yes, Santa Maria is easily accessible from Palermo and a good base for sightseeing. Great for children too as the grounds are large, and safe as the swimming pool can only be reached via the locked door from the villa.
There are lovely beaches but most at least a 20 minute drive away. The local beaches come into their own In June July and August (Andy was here in May) when they are dressed up for the tourist season with bars and toilet facilities and deckchairs and paddle boats available.

Santa Maria Villa

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: May 27, 2009 Reisezeitraum: May 2009
We spent a week in this property mid May with a mixed age group of 3 young children, two parents and an grandmother. The facilities were excellent and we found nothing wanting. We had private access to a wonderful walled garden where the children could safely run around, chase lizards and pick oranges to make juice for breakfast. The tennis court and swimming pool located in a separate part of the grounds were also excellent. The English speaking sister in law of the owners lives in a separate part of this large property and was extremely helpful We would highly recommend this property to all comers.
Empfohlen für:  Reisende 55+, Familien mit Teenagern, Familien mit kleinen Kindern
Vermieter-Kommentar: Yes, this property is suitable for guests of all ages. Small children are safe in the walled garden and they cannot get to the pool unaccompanied, as it can only be accessed via the main locked door of the villa. The accommodation is all on the ground floor, which makes it easier for older guests while the tennis court right in front of the villa is is ideal for the young and energetic and a focal point for family groups. There is also plenty of land around the villa where guests can walk, including a shaded avenue leading to a sixteenth century watchtower. also within the grounds.

September 2008 in Sicily

Bewertung wurde gespeichert: October 15, 2008 Reisezeitraum: August 2008
Following a very easy one hour drive from Palermo Airport, our party consisting of six adults arrived at the beautiful Villa Santa Maria. It was like stepping back into history, the majestic buildings, the quiet courtyard behind the massive door, the spacious rooms, and the secluded Orange Grove. The accomodation was beautifully decorated and furnished, and the kitchen was certainly very user-friendly - with some basic provisions awaiting us, including a bottle of the family's own label wine!

Outside, in the huge garden area, a splendid new tennis court with - only a gentle lob away - the swimming pool where we spent many a happy hour.

A couple of very good supermarkets well stocked with fresh produce within 5 minutes drive made eating in (actually, out, as we always dined outside in the lantern-lit Orange Grove) very easy. Slightly further afield, the amazing archeological site at Selinunte (30 minutes away) is not to be missed. Make use of the Golf Buggies to get around the huge site, and take lunch on the beach below. The weather was perfect, blue skies and no rain with temperatures in the high 20's or low 30's every day. Just what we needed after a miserable August in the UK. Nannette and Silvio were extremely helpful with advice on the locale, shopping, restaurants,or beach trips, to add to the very comprehensive Information Pack in the Villa.

We would certainly recommend Villa Santa Maria for a holiday with a marvellous combination of peace-and-quiet, tennis, swimming, and some beautiful sightseeing without the added pressure of a busy tourist area.
