country solitude at its best

Clean, quite, well-heated, and filled with charming New England furniture, this house gives me idyllic proximity (if not always access) to everything "Dorset:" golf course, theater, little corner store, and restaurants. It's also a five-minute drive to Merck Forrest, an oft-overlooked 1000 acre spot set aside for picnics and hiking (or general children frolicking). I have stayed here three times over the years, finding it convenient on a lot of fronts, some nights for the simple pleasure of walking to and from Dorset's town green for a quick bite at the local bar. The rooms are done-up in enough New England charm that you might think Robert Frost is coming over for a cocktail party; and, actually, the living room is a lovely spot in which to host one. On more than one occasion this house has served as a perfect central spot for a gathering. Importantly for the snow season: Dorset is not a part of the ski scene, but it is close enough to reach the mountains easily. Unlike Manchester, which can be tangled in traffic around its shopping district, and unlike Stratton, which often feels bleak and empty any day but Saturday, Dorset is a place of CEO's, artists and good conversation. In short, it's a more sophisticated country town. I like the feeling of a getaway that, nevertheless, still feels like home.
